Who out there thinks that The 304 holden motor is a better motor than the 302. When you look at the 2 standard motors the holden is capable of 383 and has heads which can flow 600hp when heavily ported and the 302 can only be stroked to 347 and has heads which are piss poor( not so bad in the AU GT40p era). I am a avid ford driver but the standard windsor is a pain in the butt to get going well, i mean air flow mter throttle body heads manifold most of the motor has to be turfed to get it to go, even the 302 block is to weak for over 500 odd hp, where as the 304 block has made over 1200hp in some instances.

Check out he turbomustang site 302's not so bad, remember 221-302 was designed in the late 50's and some bright spark weakened them in the late 70's, 304 was penned in the late 80's, heads specifically designed for more flow and efi, if you compare to 253/308 heads & engines then 302 is better donk. This makes hotting a 302 much more rewarding!
you can get heads to flow the same numbers if not more than the holden 304, as for stroking, you can take the little 302 out to just over 400ci, cant remember what crank and rods to use but it can be done, the mustang boys in america have and do produce more hp from the 302 block than what the holden guys can with the 304.
on the other side the 304 block from factory is heaps stronger than the 302 blocks that we have, but having said that we can still get svo blocks from the states which are stronger than the 304. at the end of the day, both motors are limited to how much $$$$$ you can throw at them to the hp you get in return
Ford I'd say Ford came to the conclusion that its better to build a light weight V8 for the masses and leave the R302 for the revhead guys..After all you don't want to haul another 100 kg around when it's not required...
For example almost any XR8 would possibly beat even an H.O around Bathurst if both are in std trim..The handling and braking brings them closser..Then there airodynamics 5 speed, tyres, efi etc... From memory they where just under 3 min..
The pluss's for G.M blocks is higher deck and 5 cylinder head bolts per cylinder and thicker webbing on mains...
Don't be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the Ark...Professionals built the Titanic!

The Holden 5.0 wasn't called the "plastic" for nothing...the earlier generation would walk the mains all the time - evidence of fretting on the main bearing shells. Later 4 bolt blocks, stronger A9L rods and better heads fixxed these problems but doing up a Holden 5.0 isn't much cheaper than a Ford 5.0 when talking serious power - just more common as there seem to be more Holden wankers out there. A Ford 5.0 can be made to handle very extreme hp - just pick up an American 5.0 magazine and watch the "back-half" cars running 8's and 7's....We just dont seen to have as many guys spending this sort of money on the Ford 5.0's

Squeezed is nice, stroked is good, blown is unbeliveable - but all 3 is heaven
If my mathematics are correct the 289/302 block can only be stretched to approx. 350ci due to 8.2" deck height. Holden V8 deck height is approx 8.8". So its like comparing apples and oranges. Windsor 351 can be stretched out to over 400ci due to its 9.2" decks.
My mate just rebuilt a 304, using a COME racing cam and decent port work on the heads(otherwise almost completely stock) he made 223 rwhp with full exhaust and dyno tuning.
The thing(VP Commie) sounds so chunky at idle and pulls real hard in the mid range and top end, I have been on board for runs against XR6 Turbo's, LS1 Commies and a masive variety of Jap cars, and the things rarely looses, when it does it ain't by much either..
My mates done a few motors using the Come Racing Cam and Chip package and doing the porting himself and all but one of them have felt real strong.
Is Eddie Tassone using a standard Holden block? he's making what 1500hp
Nothing wrong with the Windsor, just needs abit more work($$)to get it going intially..I have driven a few examples of both some stock, some modded, and stock there ain't much between em.
