Is there an easy way to get the viscous fan hub nut undone on EB 5.0?

Mine just spins the water pump hub on the belt.

Is there any way to do it without a hub tool?

Taking the fan off to do a thermo conversion!

Yep spend 10 minutes making a tool to hold the pulley

Or use a chain wrench around the w/pump pulley.

If you use a long 1 7/16" or 36mm spanner and a mash hammer, and are still having no joy, gey some chain tongs, remove the crankshaft pulley (for clearance of the chain) and get someone to lock up the pulley with the chain tongs as you hit the spanner witht he hammer - I have used this quite a few times with 100% success.

Another way is to put a 3/8 inch drivbe atchet into the tensioner and put your foot onto it giveing more tension in the belt then give the 36mm spanner a few belts with a hammer. The fan will spin but eventuually it will break free. Mine took about 20 blows before it became loose

Use a large drum brake adjusting tool (looks like a bent double ended screwdriver blade eg

; a couple of dollars at Repco etc. Make sure it's the large type the small ones will bend and don't have enough reach. Insert one end between two nut heads and the hub on the water pump pullybehind the fan to hold it firm while undoing with your open ended spanner. Note: unlike the six this is a normal right hand thread nut.

yeah i thought so too, just like the eb i6 (according to my gregories). that was till i realised that the water pump on single serpentine belt windsors (like my eb) turns the the other way, meaning that a right hand thread would be less likley to undo itself. i remember this cos i felt like a real git after spending 1/2 hr tightening it when i wanted to undo it

the tool i made was a flat steel bar that i drilled 2 holes in and bolted it to the pulley with 2 of the pulley bolts. needed to be long for leverage tho after all that accidental tightning

so right hand thread on an e-series 5.0L, left on an 3.9 or 4.0L

I just used my old belt, wraped it around the water pump hub but back onto itself in the oposite direction to the forced used to undo the nut. l then looped the other end of the belt on to the crank pulley. Hub may slip a bit but the belt gets tighter as you undo the nut.
