Knock sensor

Do the 4.9 V8's in EL XR8's have knock sensors and the variable ignition timing like the 4L I6's do?

Re: Knock sensor

Yes and no.

There's no knock sensor. Easy answer

The EEC-V fitted to an EF/EL 302w is capable of advancing and retarding the timing, if this is what you are asking?

The base timing of the ignition can be altered much like an "old" car - physical movement of the dizzy. Dynamic timing can only be done by editing the software maps in EEC. But EEC cannot detect if the engine is knocking, so if you advance it too far it will not 'know' about it.

Re: Knock sensor

Not related to the topic .....but curious to know why you refer to the 302 windsor as a 4.9L yes we all know its not exactly 5 litres but its close enough.....so just call it 5L it sounds better anyway..

Well ya kind of answered your own question there didnt ya? You know its not 5 litres but your curious, why call it a 4.9......

So what's with all the old Falcons i see getting around with 4.9 badging on the side? If its good enough for Ford its good enough for me.

Re: Knock sensor

so why don't they have a knock sensor if the computer is capable of advancing the timing etc? This is a pain in the * if you tune to run premium and either can't get it or u get a really shit batch....

Re: Knock sensor

The engine is a noisy lttle barstard when it comes to knock sensers..There wasn't a senser that worked without fulse alarm readings ..So they didn't use one..A senser has to be tuned to harmonics to pick up ping but it's too close to Windsors engine noise..

Re: Knock sensor

Holdens had a knock sensor on their 304's but HSV had to write out the sensor from the programming as it would continually retard the motor...They are not that good
