Maf measures the weight or mass of air..Mass Air Flow senser...
Except for F150's and a few early import engines they are all maf metered.
The maf engine started in 1988 in U.S..
Map is for aftermarket ecu's....

Ok I am confused, I took a car for a test drive and the owner said, it had to have the MAP (not MAF) sensor replaced.
The car was running rough and the idle was going nuts, one min it was on 800 rpm then 3000, he said it’s only the MAP sensor and is nothing?
I drove the car for about 20's and I swear I used a quarter of a tank of fuel.
He is mistaken, has to be a MAF sensor... It is a common problem, the diodes get gunk on them and therefore can't measure airflow properly. Take the MAF out and clean the little wires in the MAF with a cotton bud and some form of cleaner. See how you go..
The MAF sensor (assuming its in factory location) is attached to the airbox. Has a circle around it in the attached picture.
Yeah if the MAF is stuffed it will cause the car to run like a bucket o crud and use plenty of fuel. Not much can actually go wrong with the housing - more likely to be the electronics inside the sensor. It may be they're just dirty as drone said. Theres a couple of torx screws holding the electonics on the housing, be extremely careful with this bit - there's two wires on there, kinda like a filament in a light globe. Not hard to bust em.
So - if the engine looks like the atatched picture, it definately has a MAF sensor. Chances are the person just confused

Thanks all, I now know what the MAF is, sigh. But the Guy has written on a piece of paper he gave me ...
The MAP sensor system needs to be replaced.
If that's the case then i'd send him off to replace it himself, then buy it if all is ok. Something about buying a car that's not running right that doesnt sit well with me.... could be a handful of things causing that, MAF being just one of them.
There's some dodgy bastards out there (lol, apologies if this guy is a friend/relative!!)
What model car is it?

LOL no.. I don't know him and it's a EL XR8.
I just rang Ford Spare Parts and they said they have never heard of a MAP sensor.
So that's just great lol.
