My distributor was loose!

Yesterday i discovered my distributor was actually loose on my 289 XR, and ive been having tuning troubles over the past couple of weeks too...this could be why yeah?

I tightened it back up at the bottom but it still hunts like crazy...hmmm

Re: My distributor was loose!

Did you check/reset your timing before you tightened it up again.

Re: My distributor was loose!

Nah i didnt, but i dont know the value where its been set though, ive gotta ask the mechanic that because i just got the car and he's been working on the car for the past 6 years or so.

By the way, its a 1967 XR...not an XR6/8

Re: My distributor was loose!

289 top motors, chances are its retarded as they usually turn same direction as shaft..
Get it checked asap..You'll posibly find your exhaust is hotter than usuall too....
A quick way of checking timing is to take cap off and with points move whole dissy and when it clicks or makes spark, the ballancer / timing mark should be around 10/ 12 *.Tighten it all up.. Then check latter with timing light...I like to set at max advance at 2500 rpm so you KNOW what timing is at its peak torque, or there abouts...Making sure dissy is working properly..You have to mark ballancer though...
