Normal enamel paint should handle the temps but get the high temp engine paint. It doesn't cost any more and gives you better peace of mind as you know it will handle the temps. You can get it anywhere that sells spray cans.

I'm hearing you there! What colour do you want?
When I was looking for high temp paint to do my brake calipers I was assured that normal enamel paint would do the job. I used engine paint just to be on the safe side. Unless you are racing I doubt that your engine cover would get that hot anyway so can't see why normal enamel paint can't do the job.

I used normal paint for painting the Intake plastic bits in the engine bay. (Tried to colour code them to the Exterior paint colour)
I also used this as an excuse to try and find a paint colour that was close to the factory ford colour, so I used a few brands, etc etc.
Most of the paint is still 100%, but one part which I used no primer, and very cheap and nasty clear coat, deteriated.
Instead of a metallic gold, it now looks like a cheap beige colour.
So I assume from this that it would be OK, as long as the paint is primed correctly, and that you use a good quality clear coat to help protect it.
I used car touch up paint on my rocker cover, half expecting it to bubble or crack... its been on there for a few months now and is still tip top... went on quite nicely too! there are lots of nice colours in the range :) i went for a maroon metallic sorta colour.
Ive taken all the aluminum & plastic cover off the top of my v8, it actualy makes a slight difference in keeping the upper intake cooler, as someoen sugested, and it actualy takes much longer to get hot and loose power.
saying that, it also look's shithouse, so i would like to paint it and put it back on, but black is too boring for me..
what colour would suit a classic cream coloured car??
