When I put aftermarket roller rockers in do I keep the shim thats under the stock rockers? I tried the first set without it and it started to open the valve before the bolt was tight. I'm guessing I do need to leave it there but just want to make sure I dont need other parts or anything stupid like that. I'll install them but leave the rocker cover off for now till someone can tell me. BTW the drivers side rocker cover is a pain to get off.

NZ, I don't recall using shims when I installed my Crane FMS rockers. I can have a look in the box when I get home (I kept all the old bits) for the old shims if you like. Are you sure you have the offending cylinder at TDC ie you're not tightening down on a cam lobe are you?

With stock heads and cam they should go on without any shims. Make sure you are on the cams base circle (the way I do it is to rotate the engine until the exhaust valve opens and closes, just as the exhaust closes, the inlet opens. Once the inlet closes fully you are on the cams base circle), then follow the YT instructions to set the preload correctly. You may need shims but it is unusual with the stock parts.

Well it may not be a shim as such it was a peice of metal with the edges bent up which sat on the pedistal and then the stock rockers sat on that.

BTW the stock rockers are such shit! I'd change the rockers to aftermarket ones just for that reason!
