Snorkel for EF XR8

I have a series I EF XR8 with genie extractors and a full 2.5" exhaust system. What (if any) is the best snorkel to upgrade to?

Re: Snorkel for EF XR8

The better snorkle is the part for EL2XR8/ELGT, but it will do hardly anything while you have the stock 55mm MAF choking up the intake anyway.

Re: Snorkel for EF XR8

Not sure if both series 1 and 2 had it, but the ELXR8/GT snorkle was from the EF XR8. Part number of the EF/EL XR8 EL GT one is EFTVE 9A624 A. I think the part number is on the underside of the snorkle, so it may pay to check yours to see if it is that one. Also make sure you upgrade to a K&N or BMC panel air filter.

BTW the stock 55mm MAF although small is not a restriction until you start doing some intake or head mods. MM&FF magazine did a comparison on a stock engine 240Hp mustang engine (almost identicle to the EF/EL engines) and a larger 75mm C&L MAF actually made it slower.

Re: Snorkel for EF XR8

That's funny because I just swapped mine out for a 70mm AU maf and the difference in response and horsepower right thru the rev range is very apparent. I do also have the AU 65mm TB which didn't really do much when i put it on but has probably woken up now with the larger maf.

It's not just the airflow improvement, the 70mm will also have the effect of leaning out the pig-rich stock tune somewhat. I'm _trying_ to drive it fairly sedately until i can get it on a dyno to check the air/fuel ratio, but it's never run better and there's no pinging to be heard so I'm thinking it'll be ok.

PigDog,
Did you put MAF & TB on a stock engine?

Re: Snorkel for EF XR8

Yep it's a stock 165kw, just with extractors and exhaust.

Re: Snorkel for EF XR8

No worries, as I wouldn't mind chucking these on, until I can afford my new heads and manifold. Was there much involved?

Re: Snorkel for EF XR8

Very easy actually. The throttle body is externally exactly the same as the original one and everything hooks up the same. With the MAF you need to unbolt the electronics/maf wire from the stocker and put it onto the new one. It may run a bit leaner so you need to get it checked, if too lean you might need to get an adjustable fuel pressure reg to fatten it back up. Or a unichip would be even better as you'll probably be after one later if you're changing heads and manifold anyway..
