What Cam?

Ok, I think i've worked out what exhaust system im after, tri-y's with twin 2 1/4" system, next thing im after is what type of cam i should get, im new to this whole pushrod thing as i been in I6 forums all this time
basically i just want some sort of mild came with the range of power/torque between about 12-1500rpm - 4000-4750 rpm, i know i will probably need some roller rockers for this, what ratio should i be getting?
thanks for your help
James

Re: What Cam?

I would chang your intake & heads before you go changing your cam. You can get some decent power out of the standard cam. B-1B has aftermarket heads & manifold with the standard cam & his el xr8 auto makes around 165-170 rwkw.

Re: What Cam?

Standard cam with 1.72 roller rockers makes a fairly nice package, but as Gambit said, if you do a cam change you really need some decent heads and an intake. However the Crane 2031 and 2030 cams do show some improvement with the stock heads.

Re: What Cam?

As Gambit said, the stock cam is pretty good. I think it's better suited for lower RPM power than the typical aftermarket cam.

If you're intent on changing the cam though, gearing (ie 3.45 or shorter) to match would help compliment the cam's power range.

As for RRs, I think 1.7s are the go for autos.

Anyone more knowledgable please correct me

Re: What Cam?

ok, swap the inlet and heads first. I have read that the best engine to get parts off for the older V8's is the AU V8... any idea on cost?
i want to change the diff, atm its 3.27? not sure if its LSD or not, i probably want to go 3.45, (is there anything between 3.45 and 3.7 that will fit straight in or will i have to get a 9" and go for 3.6?)

Re: What Cam?

Explorer inlet off ELII XR8 would work fine too :)

3.55 I *think* is a ratio that "fits in". I remember seeing that number floating around somewhere on FF

Simple LSD test: bag 'em up!

Re: What Cam?

How much the inlet set me back?
and i don't wanna bag it up, i have more respect for my car than that (as well as my wallet)

Re: What Cam?

If you had the inlet off - you would be silly not to do your cam then.

James, the stock cam will be fine for that RPM range, and the EFI 5.0 comes with roller rockers standard. If you still want to replace the cam, you would be crazy not to replace the manifold at the same time, and the heads while you're at it
