Ok......car is in gear, some one's foot on the brake.
Got myself a Big long bar, started pulling on the bar and the balancer was still turning.
I slowly let go of the bar and it recoiled like it was wound up.
Do I put it down to clutch? Or what? Any takers?
My rattle gun is not up to the task.

One way i normally do this and flexplate/flywheel bolts is to use a short length of chain and bolt one end to a harmonic balancer pulley bolt hole and the other end to the front of the engine, like a timing cover bolt hole. Then get a long bar on the harmonic balancer and it won't turn any more as it's bolted to the engine. hope this helps!

hmmm.. we have this problem all the time on older truck engines at work. we usually use a 1" drive rattle gun. hitting it with a sledgehammer also works sometimes (but i wouldnt recommend this if you want to use the balancer again)

I paid about $1900 bare for the pair. I don't know of anyone else using them in Australia but i searched on corral and found a few people there using them.

I recently ran into a bit of trouble with my heads but's all sorted now. The intake valve was machined for 2.08 sized valves instead of 2.02, and i already bought valves. So i had them swapped over for another set and all is good now. I'll be picking up my motor from the machine shop this week too!

Do you have any other pulleys on the front of the motor you can hook a belt over whilst having the other end of the belt wraped around the balancer pulley to stop it turning?
I used an old belt to do this to take the balancer off my auto.
