What oil pump do you use?

What oil pump are people running in their windsors? I've got a Mellings high volume M-68HV sitting on the floor. Is this ok to use in my 347 i'm building? I'm also running a High Energy 7.5L sump? or should i stick to a standard pump?

Re: What oil pump do you use?

Windsors don't generally have any oiling issues so a standard pump is fine in most cases. I believe High volume pumps also have the potential to pump the sump dry which obviously is not good, but with your High Energy sump that should not be a problem.

Re: What oil pump do you use?

I am running a mellings pump.
From memory it runs about 100psi cold, normal running temp on the street about 80psi.
At the track thrashing the daylights out of it, 60psi at idle.

Smokey Yunick once said - 20psi intial plus 10psi for every 1000rpm you wish to use. My standard pump does just fine to around 8000rpm

Re: What oil pump do you use?

If U use H series bearings on a standard fillet crank the high vol pump helps with the hot idle pressure, don't mind using a few HP if the bearings are a little cooler and guaranteed lube (just use a ARP pump drive though..)

I also use a Mellings M-68HV, High Energy sump plus an ARP oil pump drive. At $49 it's (the pump drive) silly not to use one.

Re: What oil pump do you use?

the bloke who built my motor used to have a 302w in his drag car, after every meet he would have to strip it down and put in new bearings, he could not work out why he had to do this, but one day by accident the high volume pump he was using shat itself and all he haad availiable was the std oil pump, drags on that night so she'll do, he never had to do the bearings ever agian, and he also picked up an extra 30hp, and beat their p/b (somewhere in the 12's), but his explanation to what was causing the bearings to go so often was that with the extra oil prssure, it it couldn't escape quick enough there fore the oil was pushing the bearing caps onto the crank.

having said that windsor dont have any issues with oiling problems, so that is why i stayed with the std oil pump.

Re: What oil pump do you use?

Not enough side clearance with maybe incorrect big end resizing sounds like probable cause not HV pump. Oil pushing bearing into crank? should not get behind them at all remember oil is fed from the crank not from behind the bearing, bearing can not collapse unless from detonation or elongation of rod bore (always use high eccentricity bearing with stanard rods as they distort heavily at high rpm in my experience) Never seen/heard of prob like this w sbf windsor.... Why standard pump fixed it, interesting, any theorys?

I've already got the ARP pump drive. That one's a must i reckon. I should probably buy shares in ARP with the amount of bolts i have.

Re: What oil pump do you use?

Also I found problems with a HV pump. After sustained high rpm (particularly when cornering) the tappet covers would fill full of oil and spill out the beathers.
