which is a better idea when buying a header? long or short tube. does it make that big of a difference? is it worth the money and hassle of installation buying a long tube header?

If you are going to lower your car significantly (more than 1 in) I would avoid long tubes. I have just swappet to tri-ys over a set of ceramic long tubes to get back ground clearance. Some long tubes may require things like power steering bracket relocation as well. If you go with long tubes do you research before you put down your cash.
