I have noticed lifter noise on start up on two occassions with a new BOSS 290 motor. (approx 1500 km)

The first time I had driven the car at highway speed, parked the car and 20 minutes later restarted the engine. The car was on flat ground and the engine would have been still warm from the recent trip.

The second time it was essentially the same sequence except the car was parked on a slight downwards slope.

When the engine was started I could hear a definite tap tap tap tap tap from the top of the motor before it righted itself after two maybe three seconds.

The engine has been started maybe fifty times and I have only noticed this twice.

So what are your thoughts? Is this normal?

Should I instigate an early oil change or even a different brand of oil ??

I wouldn't worry too much. This has been happening for the last 31,000kms on my car and Ford say it is nothing to worry about. Only does it first thing in the morning, every morning for 3 seconds, then if it has been sitting for a while, but usually only in the morning

What can happen with a hydrualic lifter is if the engine is shut off and any one of the lifters if left with full load left on it (from the cam being on full lift) the lifter can bleed back. Hence when it starts it has no oil in it. Takes a couple of seconds for the lifter to be at normal status when you start the motor.

This isnt really a common problem with engines used on a daily basis.......

My XR8 ute does the same thing, if it sits for a couple of days. Mentioned it to Ford and they didn't seem to concerned but then they don't seem to be to concerned about anything.

Sounds like you are pretty relaxed about this.

I will keep a watching brief, in case the problem worsens.

In noticed from others on the forum that oil usage is a problem for some owners. A lot of people are reporting oil usage problems up to 10 000 km's and a few seem to be experiencing big oil problems even beyond this.

Think I'll check this out with local dealer and will keep you posted of the advice that I receive.

YOur right your not a mechanic so you dont know... Over head cams cam be either adjustable (Mechanical) or Hydrulaic lifters....

OK... So tell us... Are they mechanical OR hydraulic on the BOSS??
(And I'd suggest they are called rockers, not lifters, on an OHC engine?)
