Hi, I'm a little earlier, I have a 390 4bbl carb in my 63 Galaxie, but basically all years 58-68 take almost same type carb on these big block Fords. I presently have the stock Ford Carb (Autolite) and have no problems with it. I put a new carb kit in about two years ago after 15 years of trouble free carb. Mine has auto choke whereas your could have an electric choke if it has a wire up to it. "I would recommend stay with the original type carb," these are still available at Ford dealers if you can get a good parts man to be patient and find one for you. You can also get carb kits for these. Some Fords came with Holley carbs too, but I had trouble with my Holley on my 76 Ford Truck years ago. It had a sloppy fit on the throttle shaft even when brand new and I took it apart and had to shim the shaft, otherwise gas leaked out both ends of the shaft when sitting. Anyway good luck......Bob

ya ford used a lot of the same carbs year after year on the FE motors, it has 2bbl with auto choke on it now, not electric, iam soon changin it to a 4bbl most likely with electric choke, and electronic ignition for reliability

Yes, I have electronic ignition in my 63 Galaxie, had noproblems with it. Its a Petronix kit which fits right inside the distributor. You pull the old points and condenser and the new module sits just where the points did and a magnetic pickup fits over the cam lobe of the distributor shaft. It still must be gapped at approx .030 It takes about half an hour fiddle fartin to install it. Petronix is the name brand. Some good advice though is to always carry a spare condenser and points incase the electronic unit fails.

Re: 390 4bbl's what carbs?

I have 2 390 engines-I run a holley 750 double pumper with manual choke on one. I go with 750 because I feel it can deliver plenty more juice then the 500, I'm running this on a high rise intake-but with my engine and setup this is how you watch your fuel gauge slowly turn to E literally before your eyes. The other runs stock ford 4bbl carbs, those are more fuel effiecient but don't deliver as much kick when you drop the pedal. I have 2 more stock carbs if you are seeking one. More kick? Or more fuel milage?- This will determind what CFM you want to aim for.

I always go with the stock Autolite, either 2100 or 4100 (4bbl). They are easy to tune and the most reliable you can find. Google autolite 4100 forum and there's all help you'll ever can ask for.
