Does anybody know if the 2bbl intake on a 67 or any 390 has coolant flowing through it? thanks

ALL FE intakes have coolant flowing through them, Top hose/header tank & thermostat bolt to front of manifold coolant returns this way via front coolant ports in heads.

Re: 390 intake coolant passage?

Some FE blocks had a carburetor spacer between the carb and the intake manifold that also had coolant flow. The coolant flows from the front of the engine through the spacer inlet hose and into the carburetor coolant spacer, circulates through the spacer and flows into the heater inlet hose and into the heater.

Re: 390 intake coolant passage?

thanks for the info, because every time i start my 67, some water comes out the exhaust so im thinkin that the gaskets on my intake manifold are going bad and leaking into my cylinders.

Re: 390 intake coolant passage?

It is quite normal for some vapour or water droplets to come out from the exhaust when you have just started your motor. Especially in this damp wet part of the world. If you are getting water into the cylinders you would experience some frequent missfiring on the plugs, and probably some of that moisture would run down the cylinder walls into the oil and your oil would slowly become discoloured and cloudy. Before changing any gaskets try retorqing the intake manifold bolts. Usually when the intake gasket goes you will notice more noise ontop of the motor and also your vacuum will drop.

Re: 390 intake coolant passage?

Sounds pretty normal to me, the black colour may be due to the choke or an out of tune (rich) carb setting. The water should just be the result of combustion efficency on a cold exhaust, as long as the condition only exists at start up and coolant level is constant. If the manifold is the problem, you will experence coolant loss & exhaust will produce constant steam even when engine is at operating temperature. JMO

Re: 390 intake coolant passage?

Intake manifold bolt torque is 32-35 ft lbs. according to the specs. you could probably go to 40 without any problem on the cast iron intakes. I use to have a 67 XL Hardtop, 390 2bbl 265 hp, c6 auto, ps and pb. Sure was a beautiful car. Traded it in on a Camper for my truck just at the time of the gasoline crisis in 1972 when big car values dropped like lead balloons. Big mistake, should of kept it. Had the shop manual for it, but sold it about 5 years ago to a guy with a 67 Ford.
