confused 428 engine?

I Have A 429 But The Numbers On The Head Are C8a5. The Person I Bought It From Said It Was A 429 Pi. Can Anyone Tell Me What It Is, If It Is A Pi Engine Or What?

Re: 428 engine?

428 or 429?? You might want to double check that head casting number. Might be C8AE-6090-H heads if it's a FE engine. Those heads were used on some of the 428's but many other FE engines also. Pretty much std issue head and not a performance item. The 429 is from the 385 series and a whole nother deal compared to the 428 FE engines. There are a few things to look for on the block for a 428. But other than that it's very hard to tell a 428 from a 360 from the outside. The FE engines have the head and intake butt together under the valve cover. So take a better look at what you have and give us some more details.

Re: 428 engine?

Those are FE engine heads. But like I said above they were used on other FE engines beside the 428. Is the engine in the car/truck?

Re: 428 engine?

Sorry to have to give you the news but it won't just sit right in... if in fact it is an FE engine. If you want it to fit in your mustang.....get your checkbook out. You'll have to cut and modify the shock towers and beef up the suspension, you may have to cut away the hump for the transmision to fit. You'll need a 9 inch rear, to handle the torque. The existing rear might hold up for a while...but that's a guessing game!!
If your turning the 65 into a race car...chopping it up won't be a factor but if you are planning on using for the srteet, or daily driver, that sure is a lot of work time and money.

Re: 428 engine?

Those heads are not CJ heads. They are std small valve FE heads. I'd also check the bore and stroke before any money changes hands to be sure it's at least a std 428. It's possible it could be a 360-390.

Yep you need to cut part of the shock towers and weld in the reinforcement plates. I think Crites has a kit. Or remove them completely and install the proper support bracing. The Twang II suspension is the right way to go

Here's a site that might help you ID things a bit further. Mustang 428 Cobra Jet Registry click on the component ID section and browse around the block, heads, intake, crank, rods etc...sections.
