Hello all,

I have just finished building a 428 CJ engine and while priming the oil system I observed too much oil flowing from the oil holes in the rockers (ie the holes drilled into the rockers that are to dribble oil to the pushrods and the valve tops). I was only using a battery drill. The rockers are new cast Crane adjustable on a new shafts. There was so much oil while priming that the heads (without rocker covers couldn't contain it)

I have done some reading on this forum and asked around and it appears that restricters in the head oil gallery are the solution I need. (someone did suggest a restricter was missing in the central oil gallery in the block but I don't think that is correct since I have hydraulic lifters).

I see that some U.S. workshops have some specially made restricters for the head but I can't get them in time since I'm in Australia. I have read that forum members have used #80 or #90 Holley jets which seems OK to me. What I need to know is which type of holley jet (ie Mains?) and how are they secured into the head gallery (machined and interference fit/tapped and screwed in etc). I ask this because the engine has left my garage and I have to go and fit the restricters on site and I really want to be properly prepared and not have to remove the heads/intake again.

I am obviously a new member to the forum but I have been consulting it a lot - it's really informative.

The restrictors are installed on the head under the 3rd rocker post. If you can't find any restrictors specifically made for FE heads, you can get some 3/16 round brass stock and drill a hole in it to the size needed.

I've heard of guys using carb jets, not saying they won't work, but I've never used them.

I agree just getting some bar stock is going to be the simplest. To that end I have borrowed a head to get the dimensions and decide how to secure the restrictor.
Just your ( and anyone else) veiws on the size of the restricting hole ? I was thinking 0.060" to 0.080".

There're pretty easy to change, remove the rocker arms and there they are. I'd start with a .090 and drecrease the size as you need. If your going to drill the brass stock, start with the smaller size and work your way to the larger size. Don't forget to leave a slot for your screwdriver.

My brother just rebuilt a 390 and had installed the rocker shafts with the shaft oil hole facing the wrong direction.It was facing up instead of being lined up with the the oil gallery coming up through the head.This put so much oil to top of the head the motor was smoking some,scared the crap out of him, but we figured it out,turned them in correct position and everything is good.
