Big blocks

I am a chevy guy but my friend has a 68 mustang and is trying to figure out what is what as far as ford motors goes. Is a 428 a big block? is it a different type of big block than the 429-460s are? I hear the 429 to 460s are too wide for a 68 engine bay because of canted heads. can you just take 390 style heads and pop them on a 460 short block? Are they interchangable or are they completely different series of motors. I always just grouped 390 and up as big blocks with the same architecture, just different bores and stroke combos. Any information on the subject would be great. I'm guessing they probably are not interchangable because if that was the case most ford guys wanting to run bigger engines would just put some aftermarket non canted heads on their 460s.

Re: Big blocks

352-390-427-428 are FE big blocks
429-460 are completely different
FE's were run until 74 or 75 in trucks and the 460 survived into the mid 90s.
