hi new hear i have a ? about timing on my 390 fe its a box job 76? and its a stock internal 1966 390 it has a streetmaster 390 intake with 600 edel carb at idle it has 21lpr of vacuum running in town no ping unless u grad get in the throt or let up on the throt cruzin at 65 it has a slite ping . i have backed the intial timing off and then it is a pig no power any thoughts
yep iv tried 91 oct but i think 55 deg of timing at 65 cruz is to much . i have 20deg int 36 at 3000 with vacuum off and it runs really good that way with no hint of pinging under hard axceelaration but if u just lightly step on the gas ped it will ping the vacuum advance gives it way to much addvance its like an addional 24 degrees . iv run it with the vacuum off and the gas milage goes it the toilet. i was woundering if any one has tried a differt vacuum can on ther duraspark with less advance?
I sure hope you have a good supply of pistons and rods. You don't say what transmission. If standard it is 4 degs. if automatic it is 6 degs. total of 32. It can go to 36 but not recommended. If you have the original vacuum advance it is adjustable by removing or adding washers. What advance curve are you using ? What color are your advance springs ? If your at 20degs static timing i'm suprized you can get it started when hot. What is your vacuum at 4 or 6 degs ? Will it run ? If not your distributor is out.
There are a hundred things that can cause your problem. The 390 is not one of the easiest engines to tune and " dial " in. Even if your rockers are warn you will not get the
complete valve lift. If your intake gaskets have a smaller opening than the manifold, they usually are, you will loose power. That engine has a flat manifold. A bloody nighmare when refilling antifreeze. It's touqued to around 30 lbs. and they are subject to
cracking at the bolt bosses. Vacuum leak and oil leak. I know, i cracked mine. You have to do more testing. Do not run it any longer at 55 degs.
it starts really good at 20degs static timing and i only have 16degs of centerfug in the dist it is an 8L. the springs are natural in coler the addvance starts at 900rpms and is full in 36degr at 3000rpms the problem i have is that manif and carb bilds 21 lps of vac at 60mph cruzz so with the stock 1976 vac addvance can it gives it 24 more digre of addvance. ther is no totle advance adjustment in the stock can except for the rate of when it comes in u can limit the amount if u turn it all the way counterclockwise and bind up the spring. does any one know how much advance a VC-221 can has?
ok i will start over i have a 1976 f150 it is bilt out of sevirol other rigges it has a 1966 ? 390 . it has a edel streatmaster 390 intake thay have reall small ports and top out at about 4250rpms i have a 1406 600 edel carb on it . did comp test and it builds 165lps so dont think it is a high comp moter . the dizzy is a modified 360 duraspark it only has 16deg of mech advance in it .it has a 8L not an 18L relucter in it . i have a dial timing light so i know it starts to advance at 900rpms and stop advancing at 3000rpms if it was a drag racer and didnt car about gas millage than i would not hook up the vacuum but since i do drive it on the street i want a vacuum can that works. if it had about 18deg total in the can i think that would work great . i would have 390power and git beter than 13mpg so any thoughts?
If your getting 13 M.P.G. with a 390 your doing pretty damn good. 10mpg is about normal. My 66 390 did 10mpg at 75 mph pulling a trailor and 10mpg at 55 mph without the trailor. What do you mean by " 360 " duraspark ? Is that the model number or is it from a 360 C.I. engine ? Where are you getting your vacuum ? above the throttle plate
or below it ?
if u got the same pulling a trailor as u did emty than some thin is very wrong with ur set up. My dads 71 3/4 360 2wheel drive got 11mph pulling campertrailor and 16 empty . my freind gets 15 mph with his 75 390. r set up is close his has an edel performer and a carter 625 his dist has a cheve stille vacuum addvance and he can limit the totale amount of vacuum addvence. i wish i had the 250bucks he paid for it but i dont. im looking at wether to by a 60doller vacuum advance part number VC-221 to see if it will limit the advance to 18degr. the one i have now goes to 24deges unless u turn the allen screw all the way out and it binds up the spring. yep it is out of the 360 that was in it. at cruzz the vacuum was the same ether port only changed at idel
so i should take the 360 1/2 ton truck duraspark out of my 390 because the 1966 single piont type dist is better ? I dont think so. and as for the cam if the factory degreed the stock cam wrong they should be fired. all i was asking for was if any one had any idea of where i could get a diferent vacuum can with less total timing in it and i see no one has any idea of where so thank u for ur suport. I will save the money and bye a chev stile dist for my car 390 that is in my truck.
Yes. Use a little common sence. If the 360 dist. was the same as the 390 why is there
two different dist. for two different engines ? No offence. Did you know that the dist from a 318 automatic will not fit the 318 standard of the same year ? Dist. gears are different. I had a 66 390. I know what i'm talking about. My first job at 16 was an engine rebuilder in a production plant. Started out rebuilding Ford Flatheads. I've given
you all the help i can. Try to find an original 390 point dist for your engine and see if
you get back your normall advance curve and go from there. If you do you have a dist. problem. That is where i'd start. Good luck.
so we should leave every thing stock and not try to inprove any thing i gues i should put the stock castiron intake and the 4100 autolite carb back on that car moter thanks but no thanks i found some one that nows fords and he told me what to do and if you didnt know 318 is dodge not ford :hy: :muha:
