What color should cast iron headers be?

I have a set of NOS cast iron 427 headers. They appeared to be white with some discoloration that made them look kind of yellow. I was going to have them powder coated. Anyone know what color they should have been when new? Would powder coating work or would it burn off?

Re: What color should cast iron headers be?

They were raw castiron. If the car is driven regularly rusting is very slow, but if it sits in humid weather it will rust quickly. Shotpeening after the sandblast gives it a smoother finish & may slow rusting because it closes the pores. Good castiron dosent rust all that fast, just look at engine blocks on daily drivers.

Re: What color should cast iron headers be?

If you coat them... ceramic coat them. This if you plan on using them and never sellling them. If you think you might sell them someday just use Eastwoods "as cast" finish paint. They are worth far more NOS. Good used sets are selling for $1200-1500 for the long cast headers. Figure a good $1k+ more for new NOS. You can even use a high temp clear if you want to retain a natural finish after blasting. Guys buying these want the natural finish in most cases. If you plan on selling I'd leave them as is and not do a thing.

I plan on putting them on a 406 in a '61 Starliner. It will be kept indoors and driven occasionally but not very often. I just want the engine compartment to look as presentable as possible. Maybe I'll try leaving them bare. (I've already sandblasted them) I live in a pretty dry, rust free region. I can always pull them and clean them up if needed. Thanks!
