Has anyone experienced any problems or mechanical failures since fitting performance modifications to their XR6T? Specifically, I wanna install the APS Phase 1 Unichip, but I don't want to have to pay for a new gearbox, diff etc etc since the Ford dealer reckons I'll void my warranty. They say that any performance mods will increase the risk of the drivetrain sh**ing itself.
Probably best to speak to someone who has one fitted.
The APS Stage 3 car that i saw on the weekend pull 505rwhp, was pretty awsome.
They were saying that the gearbox was still original, but getting a bit stressed.
but 500hp is a fair bit.So i cant see to many real hassles with the stage 1 kit, if driven apropriately.

Find yourself a dealer that is "mod friendly" and get them to do the work :)

BA XR6 - December 2002 ~ Soon to disappear if Ford CRC can't fix it....
45,000km service coming up - and i'll be asking for a sizable list of fixes:
* Gearbox (3rd time)
* Steering click (5th time)
* Brake Shudder (2nd time, and has the applied "Fix")
* etc...
You should be fine with a phase I upgrade, do you have a manual or Auto? I have a phase II and the auto is a little bit tired but phase I should be ok.
My T5 gearbox became stuffed at 300rwkw; input shaft stuffed. Clutch was only good for 280rwkw, before it would slip on the dyno. From around 260rwkw (based on what I've seen), it is recommended to change valve springs.
A stage 1 type upgrade to around 220rwkw should be ok.
Hey. I've been looking into the unichip mods and have been getting my BA XR6 non turb (yes, I know, trading up soon) worked on at this place. I am in Adelaide too. There are only two places who are authorised to the the unichips. They did really well on mine, got 20kw out of it at engine and better fuel economy. These guys are really good, are in Blackwood. Am I allowed to mention their name on here? I asked them about gearboxes and durability, and they reckon they have had a few autos come back with problems with Phase II and above, but no manuals - weird. I have a manual. What's with ya auto? I test drove auto turbo - hated it. Test drove man turb, loved it. Also loved man XR8. Killing myself for not getting turb - thought insurance would be outa control. Was I wrong or what?!
I really recommend getting hold of the dudes in Blackwood, Stirling Rd. They are one of the two who can work with the chips in Adelaide. If ya ring, mention the chic with the black XR! He he.
Sorry mongrel, I forgot to add that these guys can also service the car, so no prob with trying to hide the chip - although they can hide it and the Ford dudes will never know it is there. These guys are authorised Ford servicers. And they do services with good prices. I can't say enough about them - they are top guys! If you have to take it back to Ford for any reason, take it back to the guys and they can temporarily remove it for warranty saving purposes. As for the other mods like the bigger injectors, etc, I don't think they can take them out! But I guess that is the risk you take - worth it though from what I hear.
