On the way home the other night I gave it a squirt on the open road but when I looked at the tacho I was only doing 120 km/hr but 4000rpm and the car felt rough. When I slowed it was obvious it was lucky to run at all. Atleast it would idle, just.

After switching off the engine then restarting things were perfect. All the way home I could accellerate as hard as I wanted too. The next day I went to the local dealer who put it on the computer to see what the fault was.

The cars on board computer records in its memory any faults that occour. The fault was found to be the the waste gate had failed to open when I backed off after the initial squirt. The dealer cleared the cars memory so as to start a fresh recording again.

I never thought the cars were this smart.

Commonly referred to as Powertrain OBD's (On Board Diagnostics System), it's not there so big brother can void a warranty, it's there to assist the techs in rectifying all the faults that your vehicles may or may not have. It will log any faults but will also clear them if it finds it's working ok during it's next diagnostic test.

OBD is your friend.

I remember reading about the McLaren F1, there was one owned by a German who took it in for a service & according to the computer the car had been over 300km/h almost every day it was driven!

if that was germany then it doesnt matter coz you can do whatever speed you want on the auto bahn.

well apart from maybe a bit more monitoring of things and recording, its not all that far advanced from the EA days if you have a reader to plug in.
