Jan. Motor - WRX v XR6T

Subscription Copy of January Motor just hit my desk.

Last paragraph of WRX v XR6T comparison.

"Both go extremely hard and from a performance point of view are pretty easy to live with, especially when you look at what Subaru has done with the WRX to make it more tractable and quicker. But then, the turbine-like grunt of the XR6 is addictive and hard to go past. Given its almost as quick as the WRX, the XR6 must win on sheer value for money."

Interestingly in the article they are not too complimentary to the T5 manual in the XR6 and go on to say:

"The four-speed auto with sportsshift might be a better option."

Some performance figures:

XR6T 14.23 @ 164.9km/h
WRX 14.01 @ 159.1km/h

XR6T 5.91
WRX 5.81

"The shift from 2nd to 3rd, however, is slow [in the XR6] so the 0-400 metre time suffers."

Those are the quickest times I've seen out of the WRX for some time.

But look at the terminal speed for the ford! Screaming! it would also be interesting to see what the rolling acceleration times are.

What do they say about handling?

Is that with Motors normal half a tank of fuel and passenger? Or is that Wheels that does that? I'm just thinking if it was with a 1/4 tank of fuel and one really good driver who wasn't afraid to hammer the gears, could it delve into the high 13's?

Thumbs up

Yeap the terminal speed of the XR6-T is damn fast, i think roll on acceleration would definitly go the XR6-T way with it's massive torque.

Good to see the XR6-T proving to be a better car than the WRX.

The comparison had to happen sooner or later. 168kw vs 240kw = 5.81sec to 5.91sec, proving more power doesn't necessarily mean it's faster. The MY03 wrx seems to be much improved and quicker then the 02, it would be interesting to see the track times for both these cars, it would be pretty close. Either car would be good as daily driver.

Bloody hell, I haven't read about a WRX pulling those sort of times since the new one was introduced a couple of years ago. So, apart from gaining 8kW I take it the WRX has lost some weight?

I have noted that Wheels seem to be more impressed with the XR6T than Motor. I mean yes, here they have given it the nod over the new WRX (and previously SS), but they just don't seem as enthusiastic as Wheels. I'm not having a whinge at Motor or anything like that I just found it interesting, that's all.
