NSW Police are about to place ten new XR6 Turbo-charged Highway Patrol vehicles into service. The new cars will also be the first in the police fleet to be fitted with the latest emergency warning light-bar, the Code 3 MX7000.
(Rebel's note: Same lightbar as used on the silver Victorian SMART cars)
NSW Police Fleet Manager Keith Simmons said the 10 cars would be introduced across the state from next month.
“The vehicles are being deployed throughout the state, including Batemans Bay, New England, Wagga and Dubbo in the country and Marrickville, Harbourside, Riverwood and Ashfield in the Sydney metropolitan area."
“The new XR6 Turbo has been subjected to detailed technical and user evaluations prior to acceptance into service,” Mr Simmons said
“NSW Police worked together with Ford to develop the design of the car, required to meet the extreme demands of high-speed-pursuit driving.
During these evaluations it was found that the premium brake package (offered as an option by Ford) exceeded the requirements of all tests with a significant margin for safety. Premium brakes will be fitted to “police pack” XR series vehicles for NSW Police.
Fleet Manager, Keith Simmons said, “As a responsible government agency, we are always looking to lower the cost of owning and operating our fleet and the fuel consumption figures of the XR6 Turbo are extremely impressive".
“Along with lower fuel consumption comes lower CO2 emissions and we are keen to reduce the total CO2 emissions from our vehicle fleet. We also think the XR6 Turbo will have strong residual values, lowering our total cost of ownership”
Mr Simmons said the new light-bar was chosen after an extensive evaluation.
“It significantly improves the visibility of the police car to pedestrian and vehicular traffic in all lighting and weather conditions.
“With the introduction of the new cars we now have three different Highway Patrol cars we will use to monitor and deal with poor driver behaviour on our roads. It is another weapon in our war against the NSW State road toll,” Mr Simmons said.

I saw a red unmarked VY SS heading into town along McIvor Rd last Sunday. I don't think it was local - we already have an unmarked white VX SS and the Mercury Silver XR6 Turbo.
Edit: 1) If we have an XR8 now it will probably be at the Easter parade, fingers crossed.
2) I've got photos of the Turbo on my website.
