Is Optimax crap or brilliant?

OK. I would like to know what is the best fuel, specifically for BA XR6 and Ts. Been hearing a lot of bad stuff about Optimax and good stuff generally about Synergy and Ultimate... I use Ultimate (yes, it is tuned for it) on recommendation by the guys who work on my car. I know there's other threads on this issue, but I want to know - is Optimax really Opticrap or are there other issues? And could someone please enlighten me as to what the mimumum rons are for these fuels?

Thanks

Re: Is Optimax crap or brilliant?

not sure it helps or is even relevant but i used optimax on my AU an the only thing i noticed was it used more fuel quicker. ive heard if you use it for a few tanks you may notice a difference.

I'm not a fan of Optimax either. When I used to use it, the car acted like a pig when it was cold. I now use Synergy8000 with no problems.

Re: Is Optimax crap or brilliant?

Got to remember its takes a bit of time for the fuel map of the cars computer to change for the richer fuel, hence it will tend to drink it a little faster.

As for optimax, I dont really know many people impressed with it, I think its supposed to have more clensing agents than 8000, then again, 8000 and wynns injector cleaner makes a spirited drive. Optimax is about 97 RON, 8000 is 98 RON, Ultimate I think is in similiar territory - whats the name of the BP fuel with 95RON ?

Re: Is Optimax crap or brilliant?

I have had a very strange thing happen with Opti.
I have over 49,000 km on the GT-P and it has used Ultimate for about 40,000 of that. When I refuel the DTE gauge has ALWAYS sat somewhere between 480 and 508 km.
I had to go to Emerald via Rocky & Gladstone on tuesday (1300km round trip) and as there is no Ultimate north of Bundaberg I used Opti. I fuelled at Childers, Rocky, Emerald and then Gladstone on the way back.
The DTE gauge read in the 540s each time after Childers.

Very strange

Re: Is Optimax crap or brilliant?

You will find that depending on which state you live in, the 'premium' fuel available to you will differ in RON with each brand servo. Reason is, in WA for example, there is only 1 refinery. BP in Kwinana. They make 98 RON ultimate for use by BP retailers. They supply all other servo's like Shell/Caltex etc with fuel they, and only they, refine. Shell in WA gets their premium fuel from this refinery, and it aint 98 RON. Its lower, and the same thing goes for the other companies. Its a monopoly for BP.

In the eastern states, and again depending on which state, the opposite goes. As a rule of thumb I'd say that you'd want to buy from the same retailer which also has a refinery in your state.

How this effects your car's performance is another question. F/cked if i can tell the difference, so I just use BP ultimate and hope for the best....

Cheers,
Simmo.

Flappist, did you actually get the roughly 540kms out of that tank? Or, was it more a case of the computer saying one thing and the car doing another? Same question applies to Ulitmate and the 480-508 remark.

Cheers,
Simmo.

Re: Is Optimax crap or brilliant?

I use either Synergy or Ultimate.

I try and stay clear of Optimax as the car doesnt feel as good when I use it. It maybe all in the mind but I don't think so.
