I recently test drove both 6T and XR8 back to back. First i gotta say that comparing the 2 seemed a bit unfair, i was totally suprised at how different these two weapons are. I found the intiall pick up of the 6t amazing, but the 8 never felt slow, it was just doing its thing in a different way, and the way it sounds whilst doing it is soooooooo horn!!!!
I had both cars (auto) in 2nd, sat on 2000rpm and gave them a nice squirt, both stood up to be counted equally imo, the turbo felt quicker (and probably was), but like i said the 8 was still there and felt like it was only begginning to stretch its legs.
The 8 definately had more roll in the turns, but as CDAA said, it felt more solid.
The way i describe them is like this:
6T= sporty, quick, massive modability (is that a word?)
XR8= grunt, presence, massive aural pleasure ( i said aural you perverts!!)
I dont own either yet (trust me RATT, 3 weeks tops, maybe 2), and i still cant decide 100%, heart wants the 8, head says the 6t.

Hi Jim, totally agree and I was in a similar position to you in regards to the 6T and the 8.
The reason I went for the 8 was if I got it first and later decided the 6T was preferred, the trade in value after say 6 months would be close to what a new/demo XR6T would be. Sure theer is a loss, but it wasn't additional money I had to find. On the other hand if I did it the other way going from the 6T second hand up to a new/demo 8, The stretch would be huge(over 12 k+ more). Basically it would never happen. For that stretch I would aim for a F6 or GT.
I have to say that after having the 8 for 4 months I have not looked back and it just gets better. Its such a cool car to be in and the road presence is strong. But this fact for me in no way discredits the 6T in my eyes as it is truly a fantastic all Australian car.
Another thing to add is that the 18 inch wheels and prestige sound are now standard on the XR8 whereas they are options on the 6T. But they are totally different cars. The 6T gets into the power quicker but it drops off in the top end where the XR8 likes to rev more and doesn't drop off approaching the redline. As for the handling difference you only notice that in tight low speed corners, on high speed bends I feel that the XR8 is more stable. Also in Motors Bang For Your Bucks the XR8 was quicker around Goulburn Park than the 6T and that is a pretty tight circuit so the handling difference might not result in quicker times on a circuit. I also think that the XR8 and the T are as fast as each other as me and a mate ran against each other and both stayed side by side upto 160. That would indicate they are identical in terms of speed to me.
maybe not identical but its pretty hard to measure .1 of a second when your sitting in the car and racing another person
If speed is what your after why pay more money for a car that is slower than the XR6T? All the car mags seem to think the XR6T is quicker than the XR8 and more nimble. Depends what you like personally. Drive both and make a decision. I bought my XR6T because of the turbo rush on kickdown and the modification potential once it is paid off and warranty is no longer an issue.
XR8 manual - if your gonna keep it stock or with minimal mods (i.e exhaust only)
XR6T auto - if you want to modify your car (make it run 12s with ease)

Interesting decision, considering people are finding out the auto is having all the problems everybody said the manual would have with mods.
So far the manual hasn't had a problem.

Having a manual Turbo, I love the car, but the driveline has more clunks and noises than a tractor. I had a manual VYSS with the same problem.
In another web forum 80% of manual XR6T owners complained about this "driveline snatch" as some call it.
It's very annoying, and if I had my choice again, I would seriously consider the auto. Why can't Australian Manufactures build a smooth driveline for a high powered manual?
