No sorry dude, wastegate is part of the turbo itself. What it does is works off boost pressure, when it senses overboost (electronically in the BA's case) It bypasses boost into the exhaust side to slow the turbine down thus reducing boost.

Blow off valve is what you are hearing and it only works when you back off. Turbo keeps spinning when you back off the gas therefore creating more boost than the engine is using because it is no longer under load.

There is heaps more detail to it but that is the general jist of it.

Yes they do, if you have a look under the bonnet behind the black intake casting that has "Intercooled turbo" or something on it. You will see two 20mm hoses that come off it these attach to the BOV. It is hidden behind the casting (you can see it from the side of the car better).

Thanks for clarifying that. I thought I was right but obviously I am not.

Edit: I just had a quick read at this site. http://www.automotivearticles.com/pr...ed_Parts.shtml

very informative read.

Sorry about the dumb questions.
You can get all different types, all depends on what tickles your fancy. You can get aftermarket replacements that are adjustable (i.e make them louder or quieter) Then there are the trumpet type and whistle type and the list goes on. Some sound cool and some are just plain ridiculous.

If you opt for one that exhausts to atmosphere (illegal I think) they can be quite loud but if you go to the ones that plumb back into the intake then they can be alot quieter.

You can always make the standard one louder by adding a few more pounds of boost.

It isnt a dumb question, hope this gives you some idea anyway.

Yeah its a bit frustrating having the box in the cupboard waiting to be unleashed, but i might do a few bits and pieces beforehand so it only has to be tuned once.

Re: XR6t Blow off Valves

I run a Turbosmart Supersonic Type 3 BOV (with single trumpet) on my 6T.

Because it's an auto...it only really 'wooooshes' when i give it to her and drop the revs.
Someone in here enquired about the fluttering noise the BOV makes....i think they all do it....especially after a little bit of midrange boost (up to 2500-3000rpm)
I remember pulling upto a set of red traffic lights with a Skyline GTS next to me...and both our cars 'fluttered' simultaneously as we slowed down....so i think it's a common thing.

I fitted mine with the Turbosmart adaptor kit....but if you do get one of these....make sure the silicon connector hosing is tight enough to fit over the intercooler's cool air outlet (returning to throttle body). Mine seemed a little warped....so i didn't risk it and fitted tighter silicon hosing. It was an arse to get on...but it ensured no air leaks.
The removal of the Bosch factory unit was a cinch....and is real cheesy looking too!

Woooosh on!
