The car Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo.
The owner Aaron Mihe.
What seems to be the problem The engine loses power momentarily when the car is accelerating at speeds above 80kmh. Purchased new in October 2003, the problem was initially intermittent, occurring four times in the first 15,000km. It now happens every time he drives the car.
The treatment Mihe says new engine software was installed at the 15,000km service in April but this made the problem worse. On a trip to the Gold Coast the car's Electronic Control Unit (ECU) cut out 11 times between Sydney and Coffs Harbour. The owner stopped at Mike Blewitt Ford in Coffs Harbour, where he was told it was a known problem and a fix was at least two weeks away. More than a month later, the problem is yet to be rectified. Despite filling out numerous customer feedback forms and leaving messages at Ford's customer helpline, he says he is no closer to getting the car fixed. He now drives it infrequently as he does not believe it is safe.
The dealer says The car has been serviced at Gregory's Ford in Canberra. The dealer principal, Trevor Steenholdt, did not return our calls.
The manufacturer says "We are aware of the issue; there are approximately 100 reports. It [is] a small calibration issue that is too sensitively tuned to recognise potential turbo overboost," says Sinead McAlary, Ford spokeswoman. "There's a containment action in the field, so anyone who has reported it and taken their car to a dealer should have had the fix in place already." She says the fix has been available for several weeks and was rectified on the the production line this week. "There is a fix there for it ... [any XR6 Turbo owners that still have the problem] should contact the Ford Customer Relationship Centre [on 133 673]. If they're not getting good enough service from their dealer we can put them on to another dealer, because there is a fix there and there should be no reason why they're not getting the issue resolved."
Would the owner buy another Ford, or recommend one to friends? "I would,
but I would never let the software be reinstalled again."
If they're not getting good enough service from their dealer we can put them on to another dealer, because there is a fix there and there should be no reason why they're not getting the issue resolved.

Wouldn't you love to say that about your car?You loosers
in a perfect world i can see it now.problem with your car take it to ford and they fix it the first time and then you enjoy hundred of thousands of k.m of hassle free motoring.yeah pigs might fly
It's the wastegate staying open when the car overboosts. It feels like someone has pulled on the handbrake. When the wastegate closes, the car takes off like a rocket and scares the crap out of you.
I had this happen to me three times. Thankfully it never happened when I was overtaking as it is a potentially dangerous problem.
Mine was repaired when Ford found the wiring from the ECU to the VCT sensors had melted from the heat off the turbo. Once the wiring was replaced I've never had the problem since.
Mine was the first reported problem in Australia with the melted wiring but since then I have spoken to a few people on the XR6T forums and it seems others may have something similar.

my xr has a surging prob when you cruise its like someone is stabing the throtle on and off quickly.ive been back to various ford dealers but they never get it right.the only dealer to sort of fix it was warrens at smithfield.they flashed the ecu but two weeks later came back.ive given up
Just for the record. I spoke to Ford 3 days before this hit the press (woohoo my 15 minutes of fame) and guess what there was no calibration available to rectify my car at that point in time. I did the phone interview close to 9 days before this went to press as well. ie Fords statement about a fix being around for at least two weeks is not correct in my case
What amazes me is how few people Ford seem to think are affected. There's at least 5 people in Canberra I know who have the problem on a consistent basis (some better, some worse than my car) and over on the over XR6T forum there's a lot more .... just seems not many complain in the right direction.

I am glad my car has never done it, not in 10,000km that it has done. But if it had done it when I was overtaking two cars this weekend out west, I surely would have been in the news.
I literally got surpised with an on coming car after the point of no return, I had no choice but to keep my boot in it undtill I hit the limiter in 3rd and just hung on there for a couple of seconds to pull in front with about 50m to spare (which is bugger all at whatever speed 3rd runs out to).
If I had a boost cut then I would not have made it and at that speed would have been killed - all i can say is thank god my car is not affected by it.
