302 or 351

I've been given a ZH fairlane with the following engine number
JG37SY55365 K. Now according to the engine number, it should be a 351 - 2V, but the guy I got it off is sure it was a 302. Any way to know for sure without pulling the engine apart?

Re: 302 or 351

Is'nt there a volumetric test you can do by taking out the spark plug?

Re: 302 or 351

Dmax is right, only way to tell for sure is to measure the stroke
Engine codes/numbers will tell you what the car left the factory as, but after 25years things more than likely have changed

I've never had to do it myself, but this is it in theory

*remove a spark plug

*use a pencil or similar (some just use the dipstick) and feed it carefully into the cylinder, making sure the piston is at BDC and mark the pencil/dipstick/dowel whatever, at the spark plug hole.

*rotate the motor by hand until the the piston reaches TDC, mark the rod at same point.

*remove rod and measure the distance between the 2 marks

3.5inches = 351
3.0inches = 302

it wont be spot on those measurements, but close enough is all you need to tell

hope that helps, good luck

Re: 302 or 351

Y = 302 2V
K = 351 2V
However, as your car is an October car, it should be;
P = 302 4V
T = 351 4V
If engine number and chassis number match, hopefully engine will be original, then codes apply. If not, as above and measure stroke.

cool Re: 302 or 351

When youre driving either 302 and 351 does the 351 seem light years more powerful and torquey than the 302? Or is it only a slight to medium difference that is noticed?

Driving examples would be good

Re: 302 or 351

Hmm, well when I pulled the engine out of the car, I took the opportunity to pull the sump off, it's a 302 all right, looks like I'll have to wait for some more money before I can put the 351 in
