351 Info Needed - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

Have a 351 in a 65 Galaxie. I am fairly certain its not original to car. Need to figure out Year of engine and wrether its C M Or W version of 351. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Is the thermostat on the inlet manifold or does it bolt to the block??

Engine not out / disassembled yet = but looks like the Thermostat is in the inlet on the manifold. Dont know if this helps or not - the Timing cover is FLAT not a raised one. (just recall someone mentioning that it was a factor)

Thermostat on the clevo's bolts to the block. Thermostat on the windsors bolts to the inlet manifold.

Sounds like a windsor to me.

Don't know what sets it apart, but I have a 351 M in my '77 LTD. From what I've been told (can someone verify?) the 351 M has a distributor "adapter" which puts extra length between the timing and the cap. Did you have pics? I can compare to mine...

I believe the 351M was similar to the 351C except to save money on the production line, they used the same deck height as the 400C- both engines could be machined on one line...the increased deck height would make the intake manifold wider, but I dont know the width...I'll take a look for some casting numbers- used to have a book around here somewhere...I dont know if they just added to piston domes or used longer rods- but surely the 351M has heavier rotating assembly.
I remember reading many years ago in a magazine(think it was hotrod) that on paper the 351C was the best engine ever designed
bore:stroke /rod angles /valve layout, etc...
The 351 windsor didnt have the valves angled for good breathing like the clevelands, so I think valve covers were narrower...Ive got a set of cleveland heads, and an old pair of windsor valve covers in the garage- will measure them later.

I measured some of my old stuff-
Windsor heads are 5" wide where valve cover sits('69 302-2v measured) Cleveland heads are 6" wide where valve cover sits('72 351C-2v measured)

If you don't know what type of engine you have...How do you know for sure its a 351??? There was never any 351 engine option made commercially available by FoMoCo in any Country of the World in 1965 . So if it does have some kind of 351 its definately not original .

Description of location/Prefix of engine number will give some clues. But you might find your engine is a 289-2V Windsor Small Block. This was of the two engine options available to Australian Ford Galaxies in 1965 . The only other was a 390-4V FE Big Block . What body style is yours??? . Is it a Local Body or US Import???
