I have a 73 Gran Torino with a C6 tranny (floor shift) that I'm not sure if the shifter is worn or if I just have a problem with the transmission. Between Reverse, Neutral and park I get no click between the gears...it will just slide back and forth. I'm wondering if its possible if the last owner just stripped the shifter or what.

double check the linkage bolt for grins, but sounds like the shifter!!!

Thanks. I'm really hoping its just the shifter. Now comes the problem of finding a replacement.

I havent been able to find another shifter as of yet but was wondering something. My parking brake is not working (probably just needs adjusting) but I was wondering, if I am truly putting the car in park....would it still roll forwards and backwards? I was thinking with other cars that it seemed as if the tranny had some sort of failsafe that once you put it in "Park" that it would somehow keep the rear axle from moving by way of the driveshaft???

that is pointing back to linkage, there is a parking stop, shift the car to park,loosen linkage nut,force shift linkage on trans to full stop position,see if car hits park stop, retighten nut.
