confused any skyliner electrical gurus out there?

somewhere within the miles of wiring in our 58 skyliner, there is a problem. the top will go from the trunk, retracted, and go through all motions properly, and lock itself in place on the car, but as soon as the deck lid starts to close the entire electrical system dies. the ignition system fails, everything shuts off, not a pretty thing.
what's odd is that it has no issue with the top in the trunk. the deck lid will close properly without issue, only when the top is on the car does it short out.
soooo somewhere there is a major short in the system...right? any input on the matter is appreciated
Thanks! -Nate
