Another dumb question from USA:
found a link about AU falcons/fairlanes farther up in the thread, so I see what the letters mean...but curious as to no pictures of 2-door body styles- didnt ford sell 2-door fullsized cars over there? how about convertibles?
I'm redoing a 65 galaxie 4 door pillarless hardtop, and everybody thinks I'm nuts over here...the car was too far gone to be economically worth the effort, but I couldnt stand to see it go to the shredder... in the US the 2-doors (and especially convertibles) are the generally the only desired body styles, and rarely will anyone give a 4 door much respect...me, I just like all old cars.

Thanks for the info- the XA/XB 500's look like the 1970/71 torino fastback model that was sold here, except grille/headlamps/taillamp panel quite different. Did Any of these come with the 'shaker' hoodscoops over there? Was optional on the 'cobra-jet' torinos here (I used to have one with the air cleaner/flapper and gave it away- big mistake, as these scoops go for over $500 now)
Also the XA500 ute looks just like the "ranchero" pickup that was sold here.
Did ford ever offer 390/427/428/429/460 over there? All I see is 302/351- but the "302 Cleveland" intrigues me- over here in 1969/70 ford sold the boss302 mustangs- had a 302 inch with free breathing cleveland heads, was a real screamer- what year did they quit offering that engine over there? Anyone know what compression ratio/horsepower ratings were?
All other 302's sold in the US were the Windsor headed versions, and although they could make quite a bit of power, the canted valves of the cleveland heads would always give better top end flow rates.
You guys over there probably are already familiar with all this stuff, but its all new info to me- gotta say I like the look of the XA500 hoods: the scoops look like the ones on the 'boss 351' mustangs, one of my favorites(second to the 69/70 Shelby). Pretty cool cars .

G'day Ford4V429, I''ll try and answer some of your questions
We got the shaker scoops you are refering to but they came out on the model previous to the XA, that being the XY and it only came on the GT and GTHO versions of the XY
Biggest capacity in our Falcons was 351ci (in both Windsor and Cleveland), so no big blocks came to our shores, although there was a one off 428 Cobra Jet engined XWGT built for a Ford executive over here
The 302 you are reading about in the XA-XB-XC models are all Clevelands, Ford Australia de-stroked the 351 Clevo with different 'rods and crankshaft.
We did get the 302 and 351 Windsors in earlier models, but we never got Boss 302's. I dont have any compression/power figures with me right now but I will post them up later, when I can dig my books out
As you can see Ford OZ got a lot of design cues from the US but from XA Falcon onwards the styling was totally an Australian effort
Hope that clears a few things up, but feel free to ask more. Someone I'm sure will only be too happy to answer

Thank you ZH_302-
That 302 Cleveland sure sounds a lot like the Boss302...realize boss had some beefy parts inside, but the main thing that made it fly was the great breathing Cleveland heads. Before I pulled the 302 from my 69 mustang I had picked up a set of 1972 351C 2v heads- had read they were 'almost as good as the Australian heads, very close to boss 302 port sizes'...was going to put them on my windsor, but missed driving my bigblock too much- pulled the 302 with only 60,000 miles on it, and sold it- that way no going back...sadly that was back in '84, and the car still sits. planning on finally starting on it this coming spring...
Did they sell mustangs over there in 69/70? if so did they have different hood/grille than used in USA models? I hope to get a shelby front clip for mine from TonyBranda mustang parts, but its almost $3000 for the fiberglass...would rather have steel, but love the look of the shelby flat nose/wraparound bumper- looks like the xa fairlane kinda...
Heres a pic of my poor car:

Ford4v429 - firstly that's a nice looking 'Stang. The only Mustangs sold by Ford Aust were approx 200 in 1965/66, mostly 6cyl models, and then some Mustang Cobras in 2001/02.
302 Clevelands used the same deck height block as the 351 so they’re just as heavy, unlike the Windsors. In fact you only need to swap crank & rods to change capacities.
For more info on Aussie Falcons/Fairlanes check some of the links in post #26. Basically the 2-letter codes are what we use as model designations as the models are not changed strictly by calendar year. Bodystyles produced in Australia are normal sedan, wagon, ute, panel van, lwb sedan and coupe (not all with every model though).
The first series of Falcons (XK-L-M-P 1960-66) didn’t have the lwb sedan and coupe was only 64-66 (XM-XP), all styles were on the same wb but note the ute was different from the US Ranchero version (4dr not 2dr front doors and less rear overhang).
1967-71 (XR-T-W-Y) had lwb on wagon, ute, panel van and Fairlane (lwb sedan). No coupe/2dr this series This model also saw 289s come in, first V8s avail. In 1970 changed from Windsor 351 to Cleveland, (Windsor 302 continued) with 2V heads on “normal” cars and 4V on GT and GTHO.
From 1972 Falcons (XA-B-C) had unique bodies, with the coupe returning. Also 75-78 there was an extra-lwb model called the LTD (4” longer than Fairlane?). Cleveland transferred to Aust production, with only 2V heads mid-way through XB model (late 74? – not 100% sure here). Also not 100% on when change from 302 Windsor to Cleveland happened but assume at same time.
1979 saw new series (XD-E-F) and coupe dropped again and LTD now on same wb as Fairlane. V8s dropped early 1982 (role allegedly taken by injected 4.1L (250ci) six). Ute and panel van body styles continue through subsequent models until 1998, with new nose in 1995.
1988 new series (EA-B-D-F-L) sedan, wagon, lwb sedan. 302 Windsor returns with EB model in 1992.
1998 new series (AU-BA) sedan, wagon, lwb sedan, cab-chassis ute avail as style-side tub or bare chassis (previously integral style-side as per Ranchero and Chev El Camino in US). Current 2002 BA model saw intro of 5.4 modular V8 in 3v SOHC and 4v DOHC forms.
Sorry for boring Aussie readers, however feel free to correct or clarify any points!
