2 wire vs 3 wire Fuel Tank Sending Units

I have a 71 LTD convertible with a bad sender and the 2 wire hookup. I was only able to find a 3 wire sender. Will the 3 wire unit work without modification? If modifications are needed, what are they?

You will need the wiring diagram for your car. The 3 wire sender might be for a low fuel
light.
