427 Blocks??

Hey guys,

My old man races a '63 galaxie lightweight with a 427. Does anyone know of any 427 blocks in Sydney or Australia for that matter. They are quite rare as so many were blown up in NASCAR racing back then. Any help would be appreciated. Anyone else own a galaxie with a 427??

Re: 427 Blocks??

Do you actually need a block? I have a complete engine (not for sale), but may be able to locate one (top oiler, side oiler??)

Re: 427 Blocks??

Why not buy a new one? You get a new standard bore block that incorporates all of todays modern casting techniques, no one has stuffed around with it and at the end of the day you have to reassurance of knowing that you have a brand new part under the hood of your Gal.

Re: 427 Blocks??

We were contemplating getting a new one but the price is just out of our reach and besides while they are still in high demand over in the States the price won't be coming down until interest slackens off

Re: 427 Blocks??

How much do you expect to pay for a secondhand one mate? With the prices I have been seeing over in the states for a secondhand block ($3,000 to $3,500 US), then $3,500 for a new one is about the same price. Maybe I have just seen dear secondhand blocks for sale, while there are cheaper ones around. It would be good if there was, let us know how much you pay for one when you find it. By the way what happened to the block that was in the car? How about some details about the car, is it a genuine light weight, does it still have the Borg Warner T-10 tranny, is it used for drag racing or circuit racing?
Looking foward to hearing your response mate and thank you.

Re: 427 Blocks??

Yeah, they are a bit expensive in the states. I just wondered whether anyone knew of any 427 blocks in Oz before we headed for the states. Yeah it is a genuine lightweight that was built by Holman and Moody back in 63. We use it for circuit racing. Bathurst and sandown are the best tracks for it cos it is able to stretch its legs. Although the braking capacity of the old gal is pretty good for its weight, it prefers not to use them. The reason for wanting another block is because the one that we had blew up on us. Apparently there was a weakness in the casting of the blocks back in the 60's and I spose over time it has just fatigued and given up on us. This weakness was very much seen in the NASCAR period of the 60's when about 400 of the 500 427's that were built for the gals were blown up. Everything on the car is original except for wheels and tyres!!. I love the sound that the 427 makes and when its buzzing at 7000rpm it sends a nice little shiver up your spine!!
