66 Galaxie motor swap/Noob questions BEWARE!

I'll apologize in advance if this has been asked, but whats involved in swapping my 289 out of my 66 Galaxie? I was thinking a 390, or a 460 but im open to any other options if say putting a 351c would be easier etc. What does it involve as far as the transmission/rear end? Would all of that need replacing and fabrication? The car is stock with its original 289, and have even thought about keeping the 289 but upgrading it with a bored over rebuild, cam, intake carb etc. to improve performance. Would I just be wasting my time and money rodding out the 289 or should I just swap the engine? Im looking for a cruiser with some serious oomph. Gas milage no concern.
Other things to consider-It has its original engine with 107k on the clock, its an original San Diego/Southern California rust free car, and totally intact and original which really makes me hesitant to butcher the car. Your thoughts?

Each of these engine groups takes a differant trans, engine mounts and drive lines. If you are worried about a original car or what anyone else may think, leave it, but if this is not the way YOU see it, do as you like with it, it is your car. A 289 can be pumped up with a lot of HP, Ford did have a 271HP 289 in 66 from the factory, and you can go more with it. That would be the ez way, IMHO

If you do an engine swap, a 352, 390, or 427 would be period correct, however, a 302-351 swap would be simple enough to do. EFI 302s are readily available out of mustangs, 351's can be found in the trucks, and crate engines are also an option. I beleive that a 302 or 351 would be a bolt in, but i may be mistaken.

Re: 66 Galaxie motor swap/Noob questions BEWARE!

Update on the Galaxie-Im going to work the 289 thats in it, possibly stroke it, 351 or Rousch heads,Carb, intake, cam, the works. This will NOT be a waste of time. Why you ask? If the 289 at its max dont give the oomph I want, my friend has a 64 Ranchero sitting in his yard that needs a motor, or I can always find that Falcon or Stang in need of a 289. When Im ready, a nice 429 (like the one my 69 tbird had) would really move the Galaxie, and the 289 can go in another car later. I can see this is going to be a VERY long, expensive, mind blowing, knuckle busting, landlord screaming, way of life. Thanks to all that replied, and Ill see you here, im sure.
