Carb Problems

I started the '66 Galaxie this morning to let it warm up before
checking the compression. It was smoking upon startup - a
whitish/grey smoke. When I backed it out of the garage, I noticed
gas was flowing out from underneath. I shut it down and started
investigatin - I initially thought it was the fuel pump but it was
tight and dry.

I then took the air cleaner off and notice that the valleys in the
intake had gas in them. I deduced that it must be leaking from the
carb but could not find where. I figured I would start the car and
see where it was coming from - found it! There are two ports on the
front and back of the carb top - on the flat part and not inside the
venturi. Gas was coming out of these big time....

So I figured it was time for a carb rebuild - or at least it
couldn't hurt. I went to the parts store with the carb tag and they
order me a rebuild kit for under $15.

The carb tag has the following:

C6AF L
A 5GD

Can anyone tell me which carb this is - it is from a 352 and is a 4
BBL.

Any hints, tips, or tricks on rebuilding this carb? I have never
rebuild a car carb before - my background is motorcycles (dirtbikes,
Jap sport bikes and Harleys) and outboard boats. I have rebuild
plenty of carbs from these applications. Can anyone point me to a
website that walks through a carb rebuild? Or is there a
recommended book (if I have to!)?

I also pulled the dipstick and could smell gas on it. Is it
possible that the carb was flooding and flooded the cylinders and
got in the oil pan? The plugs are all black and fouled - again I am
assuming from the carb overflowing.

I still have to find my compression gauge to check compression, but
I always check engines hot. Can I check it with the engine cold?

Thanks guys,

Re: Carb Problems

Stacy,

It sounds like the carb was flooded. The guy and site you need is:

Ford Carburetor Forum. Carbs rule!!!!

A fella there, Mr. Bill White, knows his stuff. The carb looks like it's an Autolite 4100; Mr. White will be able to tell you more. It's not a hard carb to rebuild at all.

Have you had any trouble lately with performance decreasing/stumbling increasing, even just slightly? Did the whitish smoke ever clear away? Upon first start up was the smoke black at all? I think you may have a stuck float that's feeding the carb too much gas and it's leaked down into the manifold. when you started it the excess is blowing upward into the valleys of the air cleaner area. A rebuild is a good idea, and make sure you set those floats. Change your oil and clean the plugs if you can.

Good luck and post for Mr. White

Re: Carb Problems

Have had the same thing happen on my '64 4bbl, after a rebuild it was solved. My rebuild kit came with a really good blow up of where everything went and it was no trouble at all.

Re: Carb Problems

I have the carb rebuild kit in hand. I bought some carb dip and the carb is currently soaking. The carb is an Autolite 4100. The rebuild kit did not include a secondary vacuum diaphram, so I had NAPA order me one of those as well.

Upon disassembly, I found the black nitrate floats instead of the original brass ones. The floats seem fine and so I am going to keep them as I prefer these over the brass ones. The secondary vaccum diaphram also has the plastic arm instead of the metal one, so this tells me that this carb has been rebuilt some time in the past.

The primary side was relatively clean - the secondary side was just plain nasty and all gummed up. One thing I found upon disassembly was that one of the idle adjusting needle springs was missing. Does anyone know if these are available separately?

Also upon disassembly, I found a thin paper gasket as well as a thick metal/paper one at the carb to intake juncture - is this normal. The rebuld kit only had the paper gasket.

Finally, the small tube that runs from the exhaust manifold to choke was broken - there is about 3 inches sticking out of the exhaust manifold and then the break. What is the best way to repair this?

Thanks
Stacy

Re: Carb Problems

Stacey, the choke tube is an easy repair. Get a length of aluminum tubing the same diameter as the original. The tubing is not press fit in the exhaust manifold but you would think that it is due to how frozen in there they can be. You might have to resort to drilling out the stub of tubing from the manifold. The only thing that keeps it in place is the fact that it is solidly affixed to the choke housing so it can't go anywhere. I slid some heat proof mesh over the tube to help keep the heat from disapating before it gets to the choke and it looks way professional. You can get this material from NAPA in several different diameters to accomodate your tubing. Steve
