I need to change out the ring and pimion in my 64 galaxie. How do I know which axles it has, without taking it apart? I am running a 460 w/c6. What gear set do you recommend? Would something down around 3:08 be too much?
if it is the original unmolested rear end, it will have a tag on one of the bolts. this is the info tag for that assembly. you can easily decode and it will give you all the info. if you have a 460 and c6 you probably already know its not the original drivetrain.
Correct on the tag. Without the tag you need to disassemble the rear axle. The two side axles out first then the main chunk drops out the front of the middle of the housing. Or you can mark your one tire and driveshaft and spin the tire once slowly while counting driveshaft revolutions. 3.08 is a speed gear for gas mileage. No torque at all. 3.25 is nice.
P.S. all gear ratios relate to how many times the driveshaft spins to bring the wheel/tire around once. Oh and when checking you jack up ONLY ONE wheel.
