I just invested in a really nice 1962 Ford Galaxie 500X/L. Everything seems to be good except, I am trying to figure out what engine is in the bay. The seller told me it was a 429/460 but how do I find out for sure? Also, how do I find out which transmission is in there?

Unfortunately the only answer i can give you is " look ". There is almost no physical
differance betwen the 429 / 460 but the sticker on the valve cover will tell you if it's
still there. As far as the transmission is concerened it could be a baby back C6 or a
regular C6. Again you have to look. The differance is in the bell housing. you have to know what your looking for.

As i said the engines look identical. the valve cover on the drivers side has a sticker on it
if it's still there and not covered in grease. That will tell you the engine size. The 460 has
VERY large exhaust manifolds and the exit holes from the head are oval. A baby back C6
has 2 reenforcing ribs on the top of the bell housing. The large " heavy " C6 has a round bell housing. If you have a baby back it's probably a 429. The baby back and the " big " C6 are not interchangable. They don't fit. Personaly i don't think you have a 429. They were not a common engine back then. Very hard to find. Then and now. Mind you i've
been wrong before.

frog, did the previous owner give you any indication if the engine was original? if it is then it is definitely not a 429/460. the available options would be the fe motors(352,390,406,427,) if you look on the vin the fifth?(help me out if im wrong,guys) letter will indicate which motor the vehicle came with from the factory, i believe ,g=406 6v.p=390 4v,q=390 6v,b=406 4v. also bear in mind that the high performance versions never came with an automatic, always a four speed trans. i did not include the 427 cause they were not available in 62.
