transmission question

hello, i have a 1964 galaxie with a 390 and c4 trans-the trans is going and i have found a few used but rebuilt c4's in my area for a lot cheaper than having mine rebuilt-my question is these other trans are off 289 and 302 engines-can i just change out my bellhousing with those transmissions with out any other changes or will this not work at all?

I due believe that the trans tail shaft is a differant dia. But I've been told the the working inside are the same, But I'm not sure.

hi, you need to call northwest transmission parts in winchester, ohio 937-442-2811 & ask the old man that buys & sells the old parts, google & get email, this guy knows what will work. i think his name is john! you can get prices on rebuild or whatever good luck jaycuzz

Are you sure it's a C4??? 390's usually had the Borg Warner based Cruis-O-Matic FMX, with the dipstick tube attached to the pan. Midway through the 1966 model year it was replaced by the C6. The C4 would have the neutral switch on the side of the trans. under the manual lever like a C6. Cruis-O-Matics had the switch mounted on the shifter or column.
