AU Hard cover Making it 2 piece

Well after about a year of putting up with my pain in the arse hard cover,I decide today to cut it in half and make it fold over on it self so I can at least put my dog in the ute and other largish object without breaking my back to remove the hard cover every time I want to se the ute for it purpose.
Cutting it sthe easy and fun part, trying to work out a hinge arangment is where you loose interest, the cover being not dead flat makes it hard to fit an ordinary pianio hinge.

I'll post the photos as I progress.

Re: AU Hard cover Making it 2 piece

It might be easier to cut it long ways as well from the back to ya centre cut and hinge both sections seperatly.

After working on hinging the hard cover from underneath all day (thats 2 days now) i have come to the conclusion that its near impossible to hinge from underneath
(mainly due to the left to right curve),Ive tried several hinge offsets/ mount postions so Im going to mount marine style stainless hinges on the top which wont look as good but still will atleast be more versatile than the full peice hard cover.
I nearly jumped on the friggin thing today after wasted 6-8hrs on it to no avavil.

Fitted some hinges yesterday although not exactly what I wanted to do (I wanted to hide the hinges),It doesnt look too bad and at least is more functional for me.Just need to fit the seal strip and some struts and a lock pin for the front section now.

Looks good mate. How about making the hinges black somehow, so at least the wont be as conspicious. And are you going to tidy up the actual cut itself?

yeh I had planned to paint the hinges black but was a little too keen to see the hinges work so i fitted them before I got the chance,I'll get around to it soon.
as for the cut once the rubber seal strip is fitted you wont see the gap.

Good on you for having a go! Must have been a big move starting that cut, no turning back... Looks like it will work well.

Just make sure you allow some provision to hold the front down if you're going to drive around with it folded like that with the dog in the back.

If the wind got under it and flipped it closed it might do your poor pooch a nasty injury.

yep that(open lock clip) happening as well, fitted the seal strip today and Im happy with the result so far.Take some more photos soon
As for cutting it ,to be honest i didnt really care if it turn out a @#!!!up as I was getting sick of it having to take it off all the time to use the ute for its intended purpose ,and I can remove the cover on my own now( removeable pins when Unlocked) and at only half the weight.
