Hmmm...
XL - Bare Bones
XLS - sort of sporty
XR6 - very sporty!
Depends on what you want the ute for would depend on what would be the best value for money.
EG:
Did you want a bench seat - XL only.
Sports handling, cheaper insurance (than an XR), alloys, etc - XLS.
Great fun, and those headlights - XR6.
As for insurance, depends on driving history, where you live, and your no claim bonus. But I would expect the XR to be more to insure than the other 2.
It all depends also on what series you buy, as i know the Series III XLS utes had the High Performance Tickford Motor.
As i own an AU III XR6 thats what i recommend you buy, its good to drive and has plenty of power.
If you budget doesnt quiet make it, then id go for an AU III XLS as they have a few things like alloys, power windows, cruise control, CD player and better cloth interior then the XL.
Or I would get a BA XL and put a set of Alloys on it, as the new interiors are much nicer the the AU ones, and it will look way better then an AU XLS or XR6.
Yeap spec wise the others have outlined the details well. In terms of engines both the AU XL and XLS have the 157kw 4.0L Intech 6. All of these models can be found in a 5 speed.
However in the AU XR6 ute you have 2 engines to choose from either the 164kw HP Intech 6, or the 172kw VCT. From memory the VCT engine is only another $500-1000 upgrade and would make it worthwhile.
Obviously with the XR6 models insurance would be alittle more than the XLS and XL. My guess is you would pay about $500-600 more in insurance for the XR6 over the lower range.
If insurance cost is a worry to you then an XLS 5 speed ute with the optional sports bars is the pick, looks great, comes with alloys and they do go very well.
Range topper is ofcourse the XR6 VCT with sports bars, 17inch alloys, and you get the unique XR6 interior which IMO is much more classier.
I am not concerned about factory stereo, mags, bodykit and extra stuff that would only be replaced by me at a later date. I would rather find one without these things to lower cost.
Then again it would be a bonus to score a ute with some big fat tickford rims, exhaust, tint, colour coded hardtop tray lid etc
How much would a decent AUII XR6 cost second hand (~45,000k's) compared with the same series XLS etc?
Yeh man, any help would be fantastic!!
I'm just not sure how to find the right car, and if I can't, what sort of sacrifices would I have to make. But finding out prices would be a good start.
Metal Boy, here are some prices on the XLS and XR6 AUII utes.

Probably add about $2000-3000 more for a dealer sale in the same condition.
Yeh well ive found you two cars with approximately 35000 kms each.
AU II XLS AUTO Style Side Box - $23 990
AU II XR6 AUTO VCT Style Side Box - $29 990
The Cars are both at yards and are around the average asking price for both vehicles.
That should give you a rough idea of what they are both worth.
If youve got a tight budget, i would probarly lean towards the XLS, as they have plenty of power and options.
