I believe that the states have different rules on this.
A major factor is the towing equipment that is fitted to your ute.
From my experience, you'd be looking at a Hayman Reece heavy duty unit that
distributes the load evenly through the body.
A horse float would weigh somwhere around 2 tonne fully loaded with gear & two
horses, so this would definately be on the limit as far as the ute is concerned.
I can't quote rules or figures for you, but I understand that over certain weights, you need to have a proper brake system fitted to the towed item.
