That's right .... no premium system for the ute, the prestige only.
For the Ute it only upgrades the CD player from a single slotter to an internal 6 stacker.
Adds two speakers (tweeters) but still a 100 watt system (over the std XLS and XR system). If you put it in an XL though, you go from a two speaker 50 watt system to a 6 speaker 100 watt system.
Which by the way is why I don't think the option in the ute is good value.
The upgrade is about $600 for the ute compared to about $900 for the added goodies in the sedan. The sedan upgrade with the added two tweeters, sub woofer and 6 stack is a big improvement.
In my ute however, for $600 I can change allot of single play cd's.
So if i went prestige sound i would have the standard screen with 2 speakers and 2 tweeters and 6 disc. Does this system allow me to add my own external amp and sub woofer.
I really had my heart set on the larger colour screen.
Prestige sound you get door speakers and behind the seat speakers, plus the tweeters on the A pillar. You will get 6 in-dash cd player and in XR's, the screen colour when lit up is a grey colour compared to green for XT's etc.
Can't remember speaker sizes off hand, the rear ones are 5 x 7's, which are hard to get. Not sure about hooking up amps etc..

250 Pursuit aka Brutus found an easy solution. A slight trim of the 'structure' allows quality 6x9s to be fitted. Got talking about it at the FPV Family Day.

I think it's a bad thing that you can't get the premium system in the utes, esp a pursuit. Say put a price of $750 for the premium because there's no place for the sub and its amp (they would be left out of the package), but have the colour screen and whatever's in the prestige system (speaker wise). I'm sure alot of people would be happy with that.

Hi there,
I went out and bought a BA XR8 ute and love it. I want to upgrade the stereo by fitting two 10" subwoofers to fit behind the passenger seat and an amp to power them under the passenger seat. given the publicity (Motor Mag) on the limitations on upgrading the system, is this possible?

Luke,
Yes, your stuck for the head unit, u can use a high to low level convertors(ie speaker leads to RCA output)which can be had for $20-30 or buy an amp with speaker level inputs, use the rear speaker wires.(sub can be muted with the stock H/U if needed using the front/rear fader)
Put a sub behind each seat instead of 2 behind 1 seat.
Make sure u look for small box subs, ie, 10" L7 or L5 kicker squares need a 28ltr box for SQ down to 19ltr for SPL
You will need to find a remote turn on source for the amp too(anyone know?). Run a decent sized power wire from the batt (just incase u want to upgrade later on)with fuse near batt.
