Given that I've got the standard 17" XR alloys, does anybody know what's the widest rubber that will both fit on the alloy and not rub against the tray liner etc. Thinking about mismatched rubber front and rear come tyre time (can get cost price from family).

Should have bought the Pursuit. Wider rubber fits under them!

Gee, thanks AP. I saw your reply and thought I can trust AP to dig deep into his wealth of knowledge and resources. As it stands the XR does have more clearance in the arches than the XL/XLS utes. Is there any reason why the Pursuit would need to have a different tray, and does it?
Anyway Madder grabs a ruler and goes measure for himself...

Madder, The liner in my old xr8 was slightly differant around the wheel arch. I noticed in the new one you can see a seam around the wheel arch where it looks like they made it wider.
I believe Pursuits have a tubbed rear end. maybe in BA they put it on XR8 as well? Also, rear floor braces are cut and riveted further up on Pursuit to carry larger spare wheel.

Aren't the optional 18 inch wheels for the XR8 the same size as the pursuit wheels? If so then i would guees that they have they same tray liner in them.

Any offer considered.
Now driving a 04 BA XR8 Manual Envi ute. Mods to come...
rod c, in the AU XR's they did have a smaller gap in the wheel arch, but they found the standard wheels rubbed and if you complained enought they swaped the liner and shifted the wheel gards so they were the same as the AU pursuit, which is the same tub as the BA XR's
The AU tub liners were originally made to fit a standard pallet (1200mm) between the wheel tubs... Ba's were modified to avoid tyre inner rubbing (decrease of 70mm)... I believe all BA XR'S & Pursuits are like this.
So what's the widest size tyre you can fit under the back end? All this talk of tub liners etc still leaves the original question unanswered.
On an 8" rim, iirc, the widest you can go is a 275, but it would have to be a 275/40 to keep the rolling diameter the same, or similar. In fact 265/40/17 is within a beesdick of being the same diameter as 235/45/17. And I think that a 265/40/17 would be more easily obtained than a 275/40/17

Thanks JC, I'm not sure I'll go to 265 anyway but I'll think about it (and check my bank account). When it's all said and done I can possibly get my tyre-fitter to put one on the rim and check clearances when bolted on the ute. Keeping in mind that it'll be in an unloaded state.
