You would be best getting a Haynes workshop manual for your self which might help you with this and earlier problem .

Re: 1996 1299cc fiesta engine

you must first be sure that it is the tappets! to be fair the tappets hardly ever make loud noises! the most common noise areas of your engine are the rocker gear (shaft and rockers worn) or the annoying of them all is the timing chain! lift off the rocker cover and check with (engine running) that the rockers are getting oil, there is a hole in the middle of them which supplys them with oil which runs down them on to the top of the valve stems, if this is happening and the clearances are correct then you might have a loose chain, (slack) this happens because there is a little rubber slipper that presses against the chain to keep it tight, after years and many miles this rubber gets warn, falls off, or goes hard. if this is the case you would need to get a chain kit, and only from ford and snail cam for the slipper as these go weak with there springs! do the first checks and if the rocker gear is correct i can supply you with your engine haynes for download for how to fix the chain
