confused 1997 Fiesta Zetec S 1.25 -

Hey everyone

I've read through the forum and there has been a couple of suggestions what this problem may be - and a couple were quite pricey! So i thought id post my problem exactly in hope somebody can confirm it is the cheaper solution

I bought the above car about a month ago (quite cheap!) after writing off my other car.

It worked absolutely fine until yesterday, when the engine just lost power and stalled - at 60-ish mph.

When i pulled the car up, i tried to start it again, it turned over for about 5 seconds then started - and i pulled away. (I wasnt too bothered about the problem at first because it happened in a previous car, some muck got into the injectors and clogged them, once i started it up again and revved the hell out of it it was fine) so i presumed this was the same problem.

However after driving a further mile or so, it cut off again, and this time wouldnt start.

The AA guy did some tests and he told me that there was no switching at the injectors or 'sparks'. His conclusion was that it is most likely the Crankshaft Position Sensor, so he showed me where it was and told me it would only cost about 20quid for a new one.

Before i go buy one i just wanted a second opinion.

The car will sometimes start, but it idles abit irratically and will then stall, it will even drive a little whilst its going. But other times the car wont start at all, it just turns over.

Do you reckon that it is most likely the CPS? Also, ive been informed that i can't just but a new one, fit it and hope it will work, apparently there is a code that i'd need? Personally i can't see that being true - where would i enter it?

Thanks in advance.

Rich

AH bugger. I changed the Crank sensor and its still got the same problem.

A mechanic at the local ford centre suggested all fuses and disconnecting the airflow box. If not he suggested putting it on the diagnostic test . 65 + VAT!

Please be a fuse......

Fuses and MAF sensor wouldn't normally cause cutting out at speed, you really need to know whats missing when there's no start, ie switching at the coil pack, injectors etc. Have you tried looking in the main engine loom connectors for water/corrosion- there's one at the O/S/F and poss. some at the rear of the engine.

Re: 1997 Fiesta Zetec S 1.25 -

Well this is quite weird.

Because i rely on the car for work i had to go buy a new one as i couldnt find a problem with this one. So the car has been stood for a couple of days.

I went to it today, (needed to move it) so i started it up hopeing the 10 seconds it would last would be enough time, and it ran.....perfectly?!?!

It didnt cut out, and i drove it a good 10 miles with no problems. I dont understand it.

I havent checked the elc's Fordtech, but i will. I know problems dont just sort themselves out over night, its lurking in there somewhere ready to bite me on the @rse next time im on the motorway!

Edit: Fordtech, the AA man did tell me there wasnt switching at the coil & Injectors when it wouldnt start
