54 Plate Fiesta steering rack

Hi all

I have a 2005 54 plate fiesta 42k on the clock, I've noticed there is a rattle from the steering rack if you lightly shake the steering wheel side to side, I have checked track rod ends and there is no play on either side but you can feel the play from the rack through them, I can't see the rack moving either so it has to be secure to the shell of the car, it has to be internal is this normal, I have checked the tyres can can't see any abnormal wearing on them either.

I may be worrying about nothing but thought it was worth asking here

Re: 54 Plate Fiesta steering rack

Hi,

I've just had a look at my steering rack and I have narrowed the play down to the input pinion, I have jacked the car up on each side and moved the wheel side to side and there is no play at all, when driving you can't hear the play at all, seems to be only when the car isn't moving.

I've also tried doing the same thing on my dad's nissan and it seems to do the same thing as my car, so I can only guess there is nothing to worry about. I HOPE.

From what you say , you seem to have answered your own question and are worrying about nothing . If there is no play , belt ok and PAS oil level on mark , forget about it .If still not happy , get a free check on steering from any of the fast fit centres to put your mind at ease .
