Battery warning light on (Ka)

Its a 2003 Ka 70PS

The battery light came on, then went off while driving. I know there are a few possibilities of what might be wrong ie alternator/alternator belt which rememinded me that sometimes there is a weird whining/groaning noise like a belt or a pulley. The noise reacts when the steering wheel is moved, is the power steering pump and the alternator on the same belt? Or am I barkig up the totally wrong tree :o

Is there a common problem with alternators going?

Thanks in advance

Re: Battery warning light on (Ka)

Hi mate, yes they both drive off the same belt, some noise is normal especially on a lock, but you may wish to check the PAS fluid level.
If the battery hasn't gone flat, it's most likely the 'smart charge' 3-pin plug on the alternator has a broken wire.

Re: Battery warning light on (Ka)

The power steering level was the first thing I checked on hearing this noise - level was fine. The noise is a kind of deep, groaning noise which is intermittent - either not there, quiet or there and loud! Does sound like a knackered pump or a pump sucking in air, or a knackered bearing

Will check the plug tomorow in some day light. Thanks mate :)

Re: Battery warning light on (Ka)

Jesus, forgot how little room there is under the bonnets of these things!

Couldn't find the plug or I didnt really know what it looks like and where it is on the alternator lol, can you offer any advice?

On start up, the light does go away but it came on around a minute later. Its annoying - i'd take it to the dealers but it drives fine at the moment.

Battery is probably leaking.
