Hi,I have a 1998 ford ka.It will turn over but not fire up.We have narrowed it down to the fuel pump as it does not come on every time.We have checked fuse, relay, wiring all fine. Can a fuel pump be intermittent? Please help.Julie
Yes Julie the fuel pump can fail and they are expensive £235 over here in the UK, however you may find it could be the ECU or Fuesbox problems.
If you look at the fuel pump in tank, or the plug going onto it, there should be 5 pins going to it, a row of 3 pins and a row of 2 pins on the row of 3 pins the left and right are the pump only.
Using a test meter check the 2 pump wires for voltage, if you want to test the pump only power up the pump via these two wires the one on the left will be positive and the one on the right is negative.
For anyone else who wants info the plug wires are as follows:-
Top left = Positive feed pump.
Top centre = Fuel level indicator.
Top right = Negative feed pump.
Bottom left = Fuel level indicator.
Bottom right = Earth to fuel pump housing.
Thanks dave6068, I've covered it under the question asked as no link was specified for julieandy.
